February 2011

project of the month
Ball State University DeHority Complex

Main entry - before

Main entry - after
Exhibition Hall
Completed in 2009, the DeHority Complex is an adaptive reuse of an existing dormitory facility into the Ball State Honors Living-Learning Community.   The existing 4-story building was renovated to provide housing for 550 students with more privacy and modern amenities including air conditioning and semi-private restrooms. Common spaces include a skylit exhibition hall with blackout capabilities, a two-story lounge area, a computer lab, fitness room, and laundry facility.

The existing low slope roofs were replaced with gabled roofs to compliment other neighboring facilities. The new sloped roofs also provided area for mechanical units in the newly formed attic space. Larger windows were provided to each dorm room to achieve the daylighting credit for LEED.

This was the first LEED certified project on the BSU campus, and it achieved the silver level.

Sustainable Stan Award Winners
Laura Hardin, IIDA

Andrea Graves, IIDA, LEED GA

Nicole Kurtz, IIDA

Sustainable Stan Award winners for the month of  February are Laura Hardin, Andrea Graves, and Nicole Kurtz for their diligence in recycling carpet samples in the office.  Schmidt Associates has a multitude of carpet samples (could be up to 100 tiles at a time) in its office all the time to review with other finish samples used on projects. Many of the carpet manufacturers now have programs for recycling their materials including samples. The interiors department has been participating with these programs by repackaging the samples and sending them back to the manufacturers after they are no longer required here.  For manufacturers that do not have a recycling program, the Interiors department offers samples to staff and others to enjoy as they see fit.

Make sure to let them know their efforts are appreciated for reducing the waste that comes out of our office and contributing to the recycling process for the carpet industry. Great job ladies.

Schmidt Associates Joins CICAP (Central Indiana Clean Air Partnership)

A Message from Mayor Ballard:

Air pollution affects us all. But even the smallest lifestyle change or new business policy can help make a big difference in the quality of the air we breathe. That's why the city created the Central Indiana Clean Air Partnership (CICAP).
CICAP is an initiative of the Indianapolis Office of Sustainability. Its purpose is to help Indy businesses work together to improve our air quality. It's a simple, voluntary and flexible way to make a positive impact on our air.
Why is CICAP's work so important? Because in addition to the obvious environmental impact, clean air means a better business climate for our city. Our economic development is linked directly to perception as a clean, healthy place to live and work.

Joining CICAP fits in with the office's commitment to the 2030 challenge and helps support our local community. To participate in CICAP, Schmidt Associates is committed to the following:

Knozone Air Quality Action Days Commitments

  • E-mailing alerts to employees the day before KAQADs.
  • Posting notices in a conspicuous place on company property the day before KAQADs.
  • Encouraging employees to fill their gas tanks and mow their lawns after 6 p.m. on KAQADs.

General Knozone Program Commitments

You don’t have to wait for a Knozone Air Quality Action Day to make a difference. Your organization can get involved by:
  • Making donation to Knozone of $500 or more.
  • Publishing at least two ready-to-run articles about air quality issues in your company newsletter each year.
    SEE LINK BELOW
  • Posting “Idle Free Zone” signs at your facility.
  • Actively encouraging other local businesses and organizations to participate in the partnership.

Fleet Vehicle Commitments

If your business maintains a fleet of vehicles, you can pitch in by:
  • Servicing fleet vehicles regularly.
  • Refueling your vehicles at the end of the day during summer months.
  • Using alternative fuels in at least a portion of your vehicles for at least three years. (our van uses Flex fuel)
  • Committing to alternative fuel vehicles when additions to your fleet become necessary.

Commuting Commitments

Vehicle exhaust is a primary cause of both ground-level ozone (smog) and fine particles (soot). You can help cut back on air pollution by:
  • Appointing an employee transportation coordinator act as a liaison between Central Indiana Commuter Services (CICS) and your employees.
  • Hosting a CICS informational commuting fair for your employees.
  • Offering incentives to employees who carpool.
  • Providing bike racks for your employees.

Energy Saving Commitments

No comprehensive effort to improve our quality and conserve natural resources would be complete without a serious consideration of energy efficiency. Your organization can help by:
  • Performing a comprehensive energy audit of its facility.
  • Implementing an energy conservation plan.
  • Incorporating "green building" and energy conservation principles into any new or retrofit construction at your facility.
  • Accepting the U.S. EPA's offer to become an Energy Star Partner.

As mentioned above - part of our Knozone commitment is to publish two articles about air quality issues in our newsletter (this Journal qualifies) - so see the link below to learn more about clean air in Indiana:

Upcoming March Sustainableness
(a little Stan poetry)
March is approaching fast
many deadlines will have passed
Time to recall what we have learned
And take the test that we have spurned

Mock exam meetings will be set
To help remember what you forget
Schedule your exams, do not delay
And remember to listen to what the Stan say.

events
  • Schmidt Chili cook-off: February 25 (see opinion below for comments about this event)
  • 2011 Indianapolis Sustainability Awards: March 24 - SustainIndy.org

opinion
The Sustainability Committee will be making a presentation at the next office advance regarding how we are doing with the 2030 Challenge.  As I mentioned last month, we have made some great improvements over the last year. Committing to CICAP is another positive step towards being accountable. Truth is, Schmidt Associates has already been doing a lot of the things on their list, so this commitment isn't much of a stretch for us, but it is keeping us aware of the issues.

The yearly Chili Cookoff is coming. Remember your 3 Rs for this event.
RECYCLING will be available for cans and plastic bottles.  Please pay attention to what is recycling and what is trash – separating recycling from partial bowls of chili isn’t a pleasant task.  Look for the signs! Stan has faith that you can do it!
REUSE:  Stan is sponsoring BYOB – that is Bring Your Own Bowl for this event. Be sure to bring your finest as the esteemed counting firm of Belsaas & Belsaas will be judging this fashion show, with the winner awarded 1 dozen green power cookies.
REDUCE:  Stan has also been busy baking his world famous green power cookies (made with 100% renewable clean energy).  These tasty treats will be available with skim milk – while supplies last for $0.50 each – with all proceeds going to the Make a Wish fund.  Any calories in the cookies are surely offset by the cold skim milk and you'll have peace of mind that you’re helping Mother Nature take off the metric tons of carbon emissions.

I am always excited to sample some great chilies at this event and it goes toward a good cause.  If I don't see you there, see you next time and remember Stay Sustainable.
Sincerely,
Sustainable Stan
